It is no secret that most people are not particularly enthusiastic about the fight against global warming. Most people, of course, are ready to pay lip service to the subject of fighting against global warming. But they are unable to make the sacrifices they are called upon to make, in order to contribute their bit in the said fight against global warming. This state of affairs brings about the question as to what we can do to make people to be more enthusiastic about the fight against global warming.
One thing we can do, to make more people to be enthusiastic about the fight against global warming, is to educate them properly about the real effects of global warming. People are only concerned about their self interest. So you have to show them how global warming can potentially mess up with their self interests, if you are to get them to become allies in the fight against global warming. You have to explicit, and show them things like how global warming can affect their ability to afford food, if you are to draw the picture vividly enough in their minds. You have to show them the immediacy of the problem: most people lack long-term perspective and there is really nothing you can do about it.
Another thing we can do, to make more people to be enthusiastic about the fight against global warming, is to simplify the courses of action that they are required to take in support of the fight. If the things that people are required to do in support of the fight against global warming are too complicated, then they won’t be able to do them. But if they are simplified courses of action, and if the people have been educated on why they really need to do them (in terms of protecting their personal self interests), then they will be turned into reliable allies in the fight against global warming.
Yet another thing we can do, to make more people to be enthusiastic about the fight against global warming, is to find compromise positions: so that the fight against global warming doesn’t hurt too many people’s interests. If the fight is injurious to too many people’s interests, then it will have many enemies and it will ultimately not succeed.
There is growing consensus that global warming is likely to cause us major problems in the future. Actually, there is some evidence of global warming already causing problems in the world: like where the changing climatic patterns are attributed to global warming. Yet, notwithstanding these concerns, we still see the fight against global warming being a controversial affair. Why is that the case?
Well, the controversy surrounding the fight against global warming is such a controversial affair because, firstly, there are people who doubt the science behind global warming. All people agree that there is global warming. But people disagree on what is causing the global warming. There are those who hold the view that carbon emissions and other such things are not to blame for the phenomenon. Instead, they hold the view that the global warming and ‘global cooling’ are normal cyclical occurrences which occur at varying points in time. To these people, reducing carbon emissions wouldn’t necessarily lead to a reduction in global warming. Some of the people in this school of though genuinely believe in what they say. A few, however, happen to be just clutching at straws: deep down, they know that their argument doesn’t make sense, but they hold onto it because they know that the fight against global warming is likely to inconvenience them (see below).
The controversy surrounding the fight against global warming is such a controversial affair because the steps required in the fight are likely to injure certain people’s interests. Certain industries would, for instance, be badly hit if the fight against global warming was to be carried out in the proper way. Certain people would find some of the conveniences they are used to being done away with, if the fight against global warming was to be done in the right way. So they oppose the fight against global warming. They decide to close their eyes to the possible catastrophe that would be caused by global warming. Instead, they focus on protecting their present day interests.
